Hubert Ulrich, age 66, has been a faithful Green Party member for 42 years, holding the position of Saarland's state chair for a significant portion of that time. However, he recently announced his departure from the party at year's end. As stated to the German Press Agency, Ulrich no longer wishes to align with the Greens due to his belief that their course is fundamentally misguided. In his opinion, the party has veered to the left at the federal level, which he finds unsupportable. This shift was previously reported on by "Süddeutsche Zeitung".

At this juncture, Ulrich described the Saarland branch of the party as a "roulette wheel," asserting that pressing matters are being overlooked. "It's just an empty void," he expressed. Ulrich's departure is scheduled for January 1, 2025, with him retaining the position of chairman for his local Saarlouis branch until then. Switching parties is not a consideration for him.

Ulrich served as the Green Party's state chair in Saarland from 1991 to 1999, and then again from 2002 to 2017. Following the Greens' election loss and their departure from the Saarland state parliament in 2017, Ulrich resigned from his positions at the state level.

After expressing his disagreement with the Green Party's direction, Ulrich mentioned that he would miss attending local parties in Saarland. Despite his departure, Ulrich assured his supporters that he would still organize a farewell party before leaving office in 2025.
