The Mannheim prosecutor's office is seeking to keep a 42-year-old man in a psychiatric hospital permanently, as they believe he stabbed a 73-year-old woman in a state of reduced mental capacity. They claimed that the man committed murder and two attempted murders, as revealed by a spokesperson on Friday. According to a psychiatric report's preliminary findings, he was in a diminished state of mind during the incident.
In December 2023, the man decided to kill residents at a condominium complex in Mannheim. He first arrived at the home of the elderly victim. When she opened the door, he allegedly attacked her with a knife, a wooden stick, and a hammer, causing fatal injuries.
He then reportedly broke into the home of a couple through an open window and attempted to kill them with a knife, according to the spokesperson. The man and his 42-year-old companion both suffered multiple cuts and stab wounds. A neighbor managed to subdue the suspect when they witnessed the incident.
Currently, the alleged perpetrator remains in a psychiatric hospital, and the Mannheim District Court must decide whether he should be permanently committed.
