Following a dispute with Pope Francis: Gänswein is appointed as ambassador to the Baltic countries.
Pope Goanswein functioned as Pope Benedict XVI's personal secretary throughout his papacy, starting in 2005, and carried on working for him until Benedict's demise on December 31, 2022. He also did stints for Pope Francis, a role that stirred some controversy.
A notable falling-out took place during Benedict's lifetime, when Francis rescinded Goanswein's position as Head of the Pope's Household in 2020. Following Benedict's passing, Goanswein penned a book titled "Nothing but the Truth," where he openly discussed conflicts between the retired and ruling Popes.
Francis voiced his discontent most recently in a book interview, labeling the publication as a "deficiency of courage and humanity." The Argentinian characterized Goanswein's remarks as falsehoods.
The Vatican holds diplomatic representatives in many countries and regions. Goanswein's position holds special significance as the Baltic states face potential threats from Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine.
