Folkwang accepts prize and presents Boehm group of works
On Friday, the Museum Folkwang in Essen accepted the first ever prize of 50,000 euros awarded by the Tiemanns, a couple from Berlin. In the presence of the donors, museum director Peter Gorschlüter presented a group of works by Berlin artist Armin Boehm (born 1972), which the museum purchased with the prize money.
The group of works consists of four paintings, which are now on display in the museum. The main work is Boehm's large-format piece "Monetocene" - a critical social allegory in the style of George Grosz. The oil painting with glued-in textile elements was created back in 2017, but anticipates the current widespread feeling of numerous simultaneous crises, said Gorschlüter. At 50,000 euros, the prize is also one of the most highly endowed prizes in international comparison.
The prize, which will be awarded annually in future by the foundation of real estate entrepreneur Jürgen Tiemann and his wife Ingeborg, is aimed at museums and art institutions with their own contemporary collection and is intended for purchases of contemporary painting.
The Museum Folkwang's contemporary collection has been enriched with a group of Art works by Berlin artist Armin Boehm, thanks to the 50,000 euro prize they received. Visitors can now view Boehm's thought-provoking painting "Monetocene" in one of the museum's galleries.
