Focke Museum closes permanent exhibition for around three years
Bremen's State Museum of Art and Cultural History, the Focke Museum, is temporarily closing its permanent exhibition on Bremen's history due to renovation work. From Monday, the main building and Schaumagazin areas will remain closed until the end of 2026. Other museum locations, such as Haus Riensberg, will remain open to visitors, the museum announced.
On Sunday, the Focke Museum is holding an open day, during which visitors will reportedly not have to pay admission. The permanent exhibition, which opened 25 years ago, can be visited between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm. Guided tours will also take place.
"We are delighted that the construction work, which is based on a feasibility study from 2013, is finally getting underway," said Anna Greve, Director of the museum.
Before the construction work can begin, more than a thousand objects will have to be removed, the museum announced. These include a peppercorn from the 12th century, a medieval leather shoe and a silver press weighing several tons. The restorers will examine and clean the objects - and restore them if necessary. Construction work is due to begin in about a year.
The museum plans to no longer display two thirds of the objects from the existing exhibition after the reopening. Other pieces, such as a barge, will be shown instead.
The Focke Museum is also temporarily closing its exhibition halls for hosting various temporary exhibitions during the renovation period. The upcoming construction of the museum involves relocating several historical artifacts to designated storage areas for restoration and preservation.
