Floods return to the southwest with the rain
The renewed onset of rain on Friday has once again led to rising water levels in the rivers. The critical mark of 7.50 meters was again exceeded at the Maxau gauge on the Rhine, with the result that ships can no longer sail on the corresponding section of the Rhine near Karlsruhe, as the Flood Forecasting Centre (HVZ) announced on Friday.
The maximum water level of 8.05 meters was reached at the Maxau gauge in the early hours of the morning. "Currently and in the coming days, the water levels are falling, but not continuously. Intermittent slight rises are to be expected." Currently, the rivers in the Black Forest, such as the Kinzig, the Wiese and the Murg, have not exceeded critical levels.
The peak value has been reached on the Neckar near Horb and in Kirchentellinsfurt. However, the river near Heidelberg is still rising. The HVZ expects navigation on the Neckar near the university city to be suspended during the course of the day. In general, the experts do not currently see any great danger from flooding in the southwest. Roads and squares close to the river may have to be closed.
Despite the falling water levels, intermittent slight rises in the rivers are predicted due to the ongoing weather conditions. The stormy weather could pose challenges for shipping operations on the Neckar near Heidelberg, potentially leading to further suspensions.
