Weather - Floods: Restrictions for Rhine shipping continue
There are still restrictions on shipping traffic on the Rhine due to flooding. High water mark I has been exceeded at the Speyer, Worms, Mainz, Oestrich, Bingen, Kaub, Koblenz, Andernach and Oberwinter gauges, the Directorate-General for Waterways and Shipping (GDWS) in Bonn announced on Tuesday. This includes, for example, a maximum speed of 20 kilometers per hour. High water mark II, above which ships are no longer allowed to sail, was not exceeded at any of the gauges.
There are no restrictions on the Moselle and Saar rivers. Following the flooding caused by rain and thaw, the water levels in the Rhine are currently falling. However, due to the forecast rain, "water levels could gradually rise again from Thursday", according to the Rhineland-Palatinate Flood Forecasting Center.

- Despite the dropping water levels, the GDWS in Bonn cautions that high water mark levels might increase again due to forecasted rain by Thursday.
- The Shipping traffic on the Moselle and Saar rivers, however, remains unaffected by these flood restrictions.
- The high water mark I, a critical threshold, has been surpassed at multiple gauging stations along the Rhine, such as Speyer, Worms, and Mainz.
- The high water mark II, a more severe restriction, was not breached anywhere along the Rhine, enabling ships to continue sailing under certain conditions.
- As a result of these flood restrictions, shipping companies must adjust their routes and speeds, resulting in potential delays in shipping traffic from Bingen to Coblenz.
- In contrast, Andernach and Oberwinter gauge stations, although registering high water marks, have not led to any detrimental effects on the shipping traffic, fortunately.
- The constraints on shipping traffic include a maximum speed limit of 20 kilometers per hour, which serves as a deliberate measure to prevent any further damage to the infrastructure from the high water marks.
- The ongoing flood restrictions on the Rhine have significant implications for both local and international shipping companies reliant on the river's passage, as they navigate their vessels through this challenging weather situation.
- The Directorate-General for Waterways and Shipping in Bonn will continue to monitor the situation closely, issuing updates on any changes to the restrictions as the weather patterns shift and the water levels stabilize or fluctuate.
