Floods in the southwest slowly subside
The flood situation after the rainfall of the past few days in Baden-Württemberg is gradually easing. A spokesman for the Baden-Württemberg Flood Forecasting Center (HVZ) said on Wednesday that the water levels were receding again, especially on the smaller rivers. The critical mark of 7.50 meters is expected to be reached at the Maxau level on the Rhine in the afternoon. At this level, navigation on the corresponding section of the Rhine near Karlsruhe will be suspended.
Since Sunday, there had been repeated heavy rainfall in the country. Waters in the south of the country were particularly affected - the southern Black Forest, the Allgäu and the upper Danube. The water level of the Dreisam near Freiburg has already dropped significantly again, said the spokesperson. So is the Elz in Gutach. The effects of the flood posed no danger to the population. However, roads and cycle paths in the immediate vicinity of the watercourses may have been closed.
According to the German Weather Service, rain may continue to fall on Wednesday. It should subside on Thursday. Temperatures between 7 and 12 degrees are then expected.
Despite the forecast of subsiding rain, a potential weather change could bring about another storm. The current weather conditions are still conducive for further flooding in some affected areas.
