Floods in the southwest: easing in sight
After days of rainfall, the flood situation on the country's rivers and streams is slowly easing again. The flood forecasting center (HVZ) reported that water levels had barely risen on Monday morning. In smaller bodies of water, most of the water had already subsided, said a spokesperson. Many water levels were falling.
Only on the Upper Rhine did the water level remain at an elevated level. The critical mark of 7.50 meters was still exceeded at the Maxau level on the Rhine near Karlsruhe on Monday. The section was therefore still closed to shipping. The HVZ expects the water level to fall below the critical mark on Tuesday evening at the earliest, but probably not until Wednesday. Then shipping could also be resumed, it said.
The German Weather Service (DWD) is still forecasting unsettled weather with rain until Tuesday. According to the HVZ, the water is likely to rise only slightly in some cases. A spokesperson for the weather service said that the rain in the south-west would then ease on Wednesday night. On Wednesday and Thursday, it should remain dry across the board, but then become unsettled again at the weekend.
Despite the forecasted rain until Tuesday, the HVZ anticipates only a minor increase in water levels in some areas. Meanwhile, the suspended shipping on the Upper Rhine might resume as early as Wednesday evening, once the water level drops below the critical mark.
