High water levels on the Rhine - Flooding possible in Düsseldorf

The wave of winter flooding on the Rhine is clearly moving downstream: while slowly falling water levels are forecast for Cologne at the weekend, experts believe that Düsseldorf could reach high water mark I on Saturday or Sunday with restrictions on shipping.

However, the water levels throughout the country are a long way from a ban on shipping on the Rhine at high water mark II. The German Weather Service is also predicting rather low rainfall for the coming days in North Rhine-Westphalia. "We are not expecting any precipitation relevant to runoff until the middle of next week," said a spokeswoman for Cologne's municipal drainage company.

The first high water mark for shipping of 6.20 meters was reached in Cologne on Tuesday morning. This means that restrictions apply to shipping, such as a maximum speed of 20 kilometers per hour. On Friday morning, the water level in Cologne was 7.02 meters and still rising. However, the Cologne spokeswoman said that water levels are expected to fall from Saturday.

Düsseldorf reported 6.47 meters on Friday morning and a significant rise. Flood level I of 7.10 meters could be reached there at the weekend, according to the forecast by the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV).

Further downstream in Duisburg and Emmerich, the water levels are also rising, but the forecasts for the weekend are below flood level I.

The high water mark I in Cologne was exceeded on Tuesday, necessitating shipping restrictions. Despite predictions of low rainfall in North Rhine-Westphalia, experts warn of potential high water levels in Düsseldorf during the weekend. As of Friday morning, Düsseldorf's water level was close to flood level I, potentially reaching it by Saturday or Sunday. Meanwhile, Duisburg and Emmerich are also experiencing rising water levels, but forecasts for the weekend are below flood level I. The German Weather Service (DWD) is closely monitoring the situation to provide accurate forecasts.
