Flooding in Austria alleviated to some extent

Torrential rain rapidly transformed creeks into powerful torrents. Houses and vehicles sustained damage. As of now, no one has been harmed. Yet, more severe thunderstorms cannot be dismissed.

Present climate conditions - Flooding in Austria alleviated to some extent

Following the intense storms in various parts of Austria, the civil alert for Deutschfeistritz - a community severely impacted by the storms - was lifted on Sunday. The spokesperson from the fire department clarified that there had been no reports of casualties. Situated north of Graz, this small town of 4000 residents experienced a flash flood on Saturday night that swept away cars and caused extensive property damage.

The Uebelbach river had burst its banks due to the torrential rain. Meteorologists reported that over 100 liters of rain had accumulated in the area in a short span. As a result, a landslide disrupted the A2 motorway near Graz, forcing both lanes to be temporarily shut down on Sunday.

Numerous trees fell onto the roads, and "Several routes are still closed," a police spokesperson said on Sunday. The fire department was busy removing all the damage. As per Kleine Zeitung, the fire department dealt with more than 800 weather-related emergency calls around Graz's capital. In Neudau, Styria, a nursing home had to be evacuated due to it flooding. Disaster control spokesperson for APA confirmed, "A total of 40 people were rescued."

Weather appears to have calmed on Sunday initially, but meteorologists did not completely rule out additional rainstorms later in the day. The risk of thunderstorms was significantly higher in Tyrol, they added.

Intense rainfall on Saturday evening led to the cancelation of Schlagerboom Open Air's live ARD broadcast featuring Florian Silbereisen in Kitzbühel. Consequently, the general rehearsal that had been recorded earlier was broadcast from 8:15 pm on Saturday instead.
