Hefty downpours have inundated streets in the north, with severe flooding occurring mainly in the western part of a city located on the North Sea coast. According to the local fire department's announcement on Thursday, the streets transformed into waterways as many cellars were filled and a retention basin overflowed. The sewage system was so overwhelmed that sewage seeped into some basements.

The fire department's deputy chief, Thomas Weege, stated that while this type of flooding had occurred in the city previously, it had never been on such a massive scale. The rainwater merged with sewage, causing it to flow into some basements.

Emergency responders worked tirelessly late into the night, pumping water out of the affected areas, as per the fire department's report. In the vicinity of the retention basin, approximately 500,000 liters of water flowed through the pump hoses in under three hours.

On the preceding Monday evening, the town of Ockensen in the Weserbergland was also pummeled by heavy rain. With its low-lying, valley-like layout, the village of Salzhemmendorf's streets saw muddy water reaching heights of up to 25 centimeters. A thunderstorm persisted throughout the area earlier that evening. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
