Upper Rhine - Flood waters recede - navigation still suspended

The Flood Forecasting Center (HVZ) of the state of Baden-Württemberg in Karlsruhe expects the risk of flooding to decrease over the weekend. Nevertheless, it remains uncertain for the time being when shipping in the Upper Rhine area near Karlsruhe, which has been suspended since Tuesday, can be resumed. A spokesperson for the HVZ expected that it would remain suspended until at least the weekend.

The water level of 7.50 meters, which is relevant for shipping, was exceeded on Wednesday at the Maxau gauge on the Upper Rhine in Karlsruhe. This level is reached once every five years. "Large cargo ships cause a wave impact. If the water levels are that high, then in extreme cases this wave impact could lead to damage to the dam system," said the spokesperson on Thursday morning. Levels on the Upper Rhine are expected to drop again around midday on Thursday.

Water levels are also still slightly higher in the Danube area. "In the lower reaches of the Baden-Württemberg Danube as far as Ulm, we still have rises into Friday," said the spokesperson. The rises there are irrelevant for shipping. Only in the Bavarian section does the river become a federal waterway and is therefore permitted for freight traffic, according to a spokesperson for the Danube Waterways and Shipping Office in Nuremberg.

The fire department of the town of Riedlingen, which lies on the Danube, did not expect any excessive flooding. Nevertheless, measures such as the placement of sandbags on the banks and the protection of buildings with so-called dam beams had been taken, said a fire department spokesman.

Since Tuesday, the water levels in the Swiss Rhine region and in the south of the country had risen significantly in some places due to melting snow and rainfall. However, the situation is expected to ease over the next few days. Less rain is expected. The snowmelt has also come to an end for the time being. The HVZ spokesperson said that the weather would also tend to become somewhat cooler.

The Flood Risk in the Upper Rhine area, as monitored by the Flood Forecasting Center in Karlsruhe, is expected to decrease during the upcoming weekend, but shipping resumption remains uncertain. Despite the expected decline, high water levels persist in the Danube region, particularly in the lower reaches of Baden-Württemberg, impacting some areas until Friday, although they remain irrelevant for shipping. The flooding in the Swiss Rhine region and some parts of the country have been escalated due to melting snow and rainfall since Tuesday, but the situation is projected to improve in the coming days with less rain and a temporary halt in snowmelt. The cooler weather forecasted might further contribute to this relief.
