Calamities - Flood warning systems prove effective in disaster protection.
The Federal Office has taken valuable lessons from past extreme weather events, according to Tiesler. It seems that society is now more attuned to warnings and better prepared for the worst. In the past, warnings have included predictions of dam breaches or instructions to boil water due to contamination.
Collaboration between various authorities including the weather service, Federal Army, and Technical Relief Organization has proven effective. Six cross-border operations have been successfully coordinated, and daily video conferences organized by the BKK have been used to discuss these operations. This format was initially implemented during the floods in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate in May, and it should be maintained for future critical situations.
