Flood - Flood warning for the Aland and Jeetze river basins
Due to announced rainfall and thunderstorms in Sachsen-Anhalt, higher water levels are expected for the Aland and Jeetze river basin in the Altmark region. The water level at the Pegel Tylsen and Salzwedler Dumme gauge has significantly risen, according to the Landesbetrieb für Hochwasserschutz und Wasserwirtschaft Sachsen-Anhalt, announced in Magdeburg on Sunday. With further rain and thunderstorms expected for the rest of the day, the rising trend is expected to continue. An exceeding of the threshold value for Alarm Stage 1 cannot be ruled out.
At Alarm Stage 1, it is expected that rivers will partially overflow. There is no danger to residents, but they are asked to be on increased alert. There are four alarm levels.
The German Weather Service had warned of strong thunderstorms in Salzwedel, Börde, Stendal and Magdeburg on Sunday. There is a risk of lightning strikes, uprooted trees and falling objects. Due to heavy rainfall, there is also a risk of isolated, rapid flooding of roads and underpasses. The DWD also warned of aquaplaning and hail.
- To mitigate the potential impacts, the state enterprise for flood protection in Saxony-Anhalt has activated its emergency response plan.
- On Sunday, the state enterprise issued a flood warning for the Altmark region, urging residents to closely monitor weather conditions.
- Despite the Sunday's peaceful appearance, the threat of a flood persisted due to the accumulated precipitation and the risk of further thunderstorms.
- The local authorities in Magdeburg and the Altmark area are closely collaborating with the state enterprise to implement flood protection measures.
- The city of Magdeburg, particularly its historical center, is at risk from floods, as seen during the 2002 Elbe flood event in the Saxony-Anhalt region.
