Air traffic - Flight cancellations: Train services to Munich disrupted
The massive snowfall, especially in the south of Germany, has also affected air traffic in the north. Cancellations continued at Hanover and Bremen airports. At Hanover Airport, all flights to and from Munich were canceled until the afternoon, as the airport announced on its website on Sunday. According to the overview, almost all flights to and from Munich were also canceled at Bremen Airport. At the airport in the Bavarian capital, flight operations have been possible again since Sunday morning, but hundreds of flights were canceled.
Heavy snowfall and icy conditions had caused major traffic disruptions since Saturday night, particularly in southern Germany. There were also restrictions at Munich Airport on Sunday: According to a spokesperson, around 560 of around 880 planned flights were canceled. Passengers were asked to check the status of their flight before traveling. Flight operations were temporarily suspended on Saturday morning. This affected take-offs and landings at other airports.
Rail travelers in southern Germany can expect massive restrictions until Monday. Traffic at Munich's main station was at a standstill on Sunday morning. A railroad spokeswoman warned that long-distance travelers to Munich should check their connections. Munich Central Station could not be served for the time being. Deutsche Bahn wanted to restart services as soon as possible - but initially only on a few routes and with reduced services. It was not yet clear when.
A spokeswoman for Hanover Airport said on Saturday that one runway was temporarily closed. Snow was repeatedly cleared from taxiways. Air traffic was not affected by the work.
Not only Bavaria was affected by the winter weather. There were also weather-related problems on the roads in some areas of northern Germany. In the Faßberg district of Müden in the southern Lüneburg Heath, a 23-year-old woman's car skidded on an icy road on Sunday and left the road. The woman suffered minor injuries - she had tried to brake when a cat crossed the road.
