Flensburg's handball team wins 42:32 at VfL Gummersbach
The SG Flensburg-Handewitt has celebrated an unchallenged away win in the German Handball League. The fourth-placed team in the table won 42:32 (23:13) at VfL Gummersbach on Saturday. It was the North Germans' tenth win in a row in all competitions. The best scorers in front of the 4,132 spectators were Flensburg's Lasse Möller with nine goals and Gummersbach's Miro Schluroff with six.
The North Germans were wide awake right from the start. Supported by strong saves from their goalkeeper Kevin Möller, Flensburg pulled away from 4:0 (4th minute) to 8:2 (11th minute). Gummersbach coach Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson called his second timeout with the score at 8:16 in the 22nd minute to reorganize his team's play. The 44-year-old Icelander called on his players to "not let their heads drop".
However, VfL still could not find its game. Lukas Jörgensen scored the visitors' 23rd goal with a spectacular turn from the circle. Flensburg remained the dominant team after the break and also repeatedly found the right solutions against the Oberberg team's now somewhat more offensive-minded defense.
The SG's lead grew to 13 goals at 34:21 in the 47th minute. As a result, Flensburg's Head Coach Nicolej Krickau was able to start the rest program for some of his regular players early on.
The victory over VfL Gummersbach marked SG Flensburg-Handewitt's tenth consecutive win in men's Handball Bundesliga. After the game, Flensburg's Lasse Möller, who scored nine goals, was hailed as a key player in the Men's Handball Bundesliga's fourth-placed team's success.
