Handball Bundesliga - Flensburg's handball players lose at the last second
The SG Flensburg-Handewitt has suffered another setback in the championship battle in the German Handball League. The North Germans lost 31:32 (17:15) at Frisch Auf Göppingen on Saturday thanks to a direct free throw by Erik Persson. The SG's best scorer was Emil Jakobsen with eleven goals. With 24:8 points, the team of coach Nicolej Krickau remains third in the table.
Flensburg got off to a good start, extending its lead to 13:8 in the 21st minute. The lead dwindled to two goals by the break. The lead changed hands several times after half-time. A point seemed certain for Flensburg at 31:31, but then Persson put a spanner in the SG's works.
Before the game, the SG had announced that Dutch international Kay Smits would be out until further notice due to heart muscle inflammation. The 26-year-old will also miss the European Championships in Germany in January. Instead, Danish world champion Simon Pytlick celebrated his comeback on the pitch after a foot injury lasting several weeks.
