Handball Bundesliga - Flensburg frustration after defeat in Göppingen
Johannes Golla was disappointed. "It was extremely unnecessary that we dropped the points here," said the captain of the handball Bundesliga club SG Flensburg-Handewitt after the 31:32 (17:15) defeat at Frisch Auf Göppingen on Saturday. Coach Nicolej Krickau lamented the fact that his team had let "two good leads" slip away. The fact that a directly converted free throw by Erik Persson gave the home side victory at the last second made the SG's defeat on the road even more bitter.
The club from North Germany led 15:10 in the first half (23') and 21:16 in the second period (35'). But it was not enough to win. "We make a few mistakes, we concede. And then it happens quickly," said Krickau at the post-match press conference.
With 24:8 points, Flensburg are now four points behind leaders SC Magdeburg and Füchse Berlin, who won their games against Rhein-Neckar Löwen and TBV Lemgo Lippe on Saturday. "We're now a few more points away from our goal of finishing in the top two," said Golla, annoyed at missing out on the chance to fight for the championship and one of the two Champions League places.
The northern Germans still have two games to play before Christmas and the subsequent break due to the European Championship in Germany. On Tuesday (7 p.m./Dyn), the SG will host TBV Lemgo Lippe. On Friday (7 p.m./Dyn), the North Germans will have to face HBW Balingen-Weilstetten, some 890 kilometers away, after the longest journey of the season.
Left-back Kay Smits will no longer be able to play this season. As the club announced before the game in Göppingen, the Dutch international is suffering from heart muscle inflammation and will not be available until further notice. "We will continue to monitor his state of health with close monitoring, but fortunately we expect the illness to be mild," said SG team doctor Torsten Ahnsel. Due to his illness, however, Smits will miss the European Championship.
