Flea market for creative people in Chemnitz art collections
To kick off Advent, the auditorium of the Chemnitz art collections will be transformed into a flea market for creative people. Following the example of the "Foire aux croutes" in Paris, self-taught artists can offer their work there, such as photographs, paintings, jewelry, art books or handcrafted objects, explained Sabine Maria Schmidt, curator of the painting and sculpture collection. Old clothes or junk, on the other hand, were not welcome.
Schmidt spoke of an experiment to which spontaneous visitors are also welcome. The aim is to give artists who have no academic training space to present their work. On the one hand, this builds a bridge to the "maker" narrative of Chemnitz as European Capital of Culture 2025. On the other hand, the aim is to build on artists from the first half of the 20th century whose work enjoyed great popularity outside the avant-garde.
Under the title "Which modernism? Insiders and outsiders of the avant-garde", the Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz are currently showing an extensive exhibition of works by well-known artists of classical modernism and lesser-known autodidacts of so-called "naive art". The show was created in collaboration with the Sprengel Museum Hannover. In addition to works from the collections of both museums, national and international loans are also on display. On display are works by Max Beckmann, Marc Chagall, Otto Dix, Pablo Picasso and Max Ernst, as well as Seraphine Louis, Henri Rousseau and Adalbert Trillhaase.
The winter art market is open on Friday from 3.00 to 6.00 pm and on Saturday from 11.00 to 6.00 pm. Admission is free and there is no stall fee for vendors.
Visitors to the winter art market can utilize their leisure time by exploring various art pieces offered by self-taught artists. The flea market serves as an excellent platform for artists without academic training to showcase their work, including paintings, photographs, jewelry, art books, and handcrafted objects.
