Fire erupts in silo near Kirchheimbolanden: authorities say the cause is a chemical reaction

A silo at a business in Kirchheimbolanden (Donnersbergkreis) caught fire over the weekend, according to officials. At least 100,000 damp pellets stored in the silo got heated up and combusted due to the high temperature. Police believe a chemical reaction caused the fire.

Emergency services have been fighting the blaze since it started on Friday. They are slowly removing the pellets with conveyor belts and then putting the fire out in an open area. Since the pellets absorb water and expand, it's impossible to douse the flames directly inside the silo.

The operation should continue until Saturday afternoon, with some smoke emanation probable. People are advised to close their windows and doors to avoid smoke inhalation. Fortunately, no health risks have been identified yet. The police estimate the damage to fall around €10,000.
