Flags to mark the 85th anniversary of the pogrom night against Jews

On November 9, 1938, thugs in the Nazi state destroyed synagogues and Jewish businesses, and many Jews died. Hesse wants to commemorate this symbolically. The current war in the Middle East also comes into focus.

Flags to mark the 85th anniversary of the pogrom night against Jews

To mark the 85th anniversary of the victims of the Reich pogroms of 1938 and as a sign of solidarity with Israel, Hesse is recommending that flags be flown on public buildings. All state authorities and municipalities are requested to "fly the European, German and Hessian flags at full mast this Thursday (November 9), as well as the Israeli flag if available", the state government in Wiesbaden announced on Wednesday. Usually, November 9 is "not actually one of the regular Hessian flagging dates".

With regard to the recent terrorist attack on Israel by the radical Islamic group Hamas, Minister President Boris Rhein (CDU) assured: "Hesse is resolutely and unitedly opposed to anti-Semitism, hatred and incitement and will continue to stand up for Jewish life in the future."

Minister of the Interior Peter Beuth (CDU) referred to a "consistently high level" of protection for Jewish institutions. "For this year's November 9th and the days before and after the day of remembrance, the Hessian police will once again adjust their presence measures."

During a visit to the Jewish community in Wiesbaden, State Parliament President Astrid Wallmann (CDU) emphasized with regard to today's war in the Middle East: "The inhumane and barbaric terror of Hamas, which aims to wipe out Israel and Judaism, must be condemned in the strongest possible terms."

Hesse's anti-Semitism commissioner Uwe Becker explained: "The November pogroms of 1938 led to the looting and burning of stores and synagogues. This act of terror marked the transition from disenfranchisement, dispossession and oppression to the industrially organized mass murder of six million Jews."

In light of the anniversary, it's crucial to remember that the horrors of History, such as National Socialism's extremist policies leading to the Reich pogroms, should never be forgotten or repeated. In light of recent events, it's also important to condemn terrorism, like the one perpetrated by Hamas, which targets Israel and seeks to erase Judaism.
