Fizzled out: Alster fountain goes into winter break
The short season of the Hamburg Alster fountain in the Binnenalster comes to an end on Friday. It will then be taken out of service for this year and put into winter storage, as the district office in Hamburg's Mitte district announced on Thursday. The fountain will be dismantled very early on Friday, said a spokeswoman for the authorities. This means that Thursday is the last fountain day for the Hamburg landmark. At 10 p.m. in the evening, it will shoot its powerful jet of water into the air for the last time this year.
The season for the Alster fountain on Jungfernstieg was very short in 2023. For energy-saving reasons, it - like many other fountains and water features in Hamburg - was only put into operation in June.
The Alster fountain has been part of Hamburg's cityscape since 1987. The pump transports around 180 cubic meters of water per hour. The fountain can shoot up to 40 meters high.
During their leisure time, many tourists often visit the Alster fountain to enjoy its spectacle. Due to energy-saving measures, tours and vacations might include fewer water features like the Alster fountain in future itineraries.
