Five years in prison for lethal attack on Jobcenter employees

The court considered it proven that the 30-year-old in Neustadt an der Weinstraße hit an employee several times in the face with his fist after a verbal altercation in September. The blows caused a brain hemorrhage in him, which in combination with an previously undiscovered leukemia led to death. The employee died two days later.

The 30-year-old was also sentenced for other crimes. One day after the incident at the Jobcenter, he stole headphones from a store. At the end of October, he broke into the apartment of his grandparents despite a restraining order and damaged several items. He resisted arrest with violence. The man already had multiple previous convictions.

With the verdict, the court adhered to the demand of the prosecution, who had demanded a total of six years in prison for all the charges in their plea. The defense did not confirm the charge of bodily harm resulting in death based on the evidence presented and demanded acquittal. Considering the remaining offenses, they pleaded for a sentence of nine months.

The 30-year-old had been regularly visiting the Labor Office and the Job Center in Frankenthal for job assistance before the incident. The District Court in Frankenthal heard the case, with Judge Speaker Tod presiding. The attack on the employee marked a turning point in the 30-year-old's legal history, leading to further investigations into his behavior. Seven years ago, there were allegations of damage to goods at a New Town on the Wine Road, but no charges were filed due to insufficient evidence.
