Five worthless months: Southgate and the possible successors

Does he go or does he stay? Long ago, this question seemed clearly answered for Gareth Southgate. Now, it's imaginable that the ex-pro will continue as England's trainer.

Despite good results, England trainer Gareth Southgate is controversial.

European Football Championship - Five worthless months: Southgate and the possible successors

Regardless of whether as European Football Champion or Final Loser: Gareth Southgate's contract as England's National Team Manager will initially continue from Monday morning. However, the five months he is bound to the Three Lions until the end of the year are more symbolic in nature.

Either Southgate goes after the EURO and clears the way for a rebuild. Or the 53-year-old stays and extends his tenure - then until the WM 2026 in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

The trend of the FA seems clear after the EURO final entry. The FA wants to keep Southgate, according to "Telegraph" information, regardless of how the final against Spain on Sunday (9 pm/ARD and MagentaTV) in Berlin ends. FA boss Mark Bullingham is considered a big supporter of Southgate, who had to endure a lot of criticism from some sides recently.

Will Lampard come?

Possible successor candidates are Eddie Howe from Newcastle United, the former Chelsea trainer Graham Potter, and the former world-class player Frank Lampard. The Argentine Mauricio Pochettino is also mentioned frequently.

The decision should ultimately lie with Southgate. He himself says now in the Sky interview that it is emotionally impossible to make a "logical decision" at the moment. He focuses solely on the final.

Before the tournament, Southgate had announced that the common era would probably end if the Three Lions did not win the EURO in Germany. Due to the sharp criticism and the rather bumpy EURO, a departure from Southgate is also a realistic option even with a title win.

  1. Gareth Southgate, the England National Team Manager, will continue his contract from Monday morning, despite the outcome of the European Football Championship as either Champion or Final Loser.
  2. Southgate's contract extends until the end of the year, allowing him another chance to lead England if they secure a berth in the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
  3. After the EURO final entry, the FA, particularly FA boss Mark Bullingham, has shown their support for Southgate, even amidst recent criticism.
  4. Potential successors for Southgate include Eddie Howe from Newcastle United, Graham Potter, a former Chelsea trainer, Frank Lampard, and Mauricio Pochettino.
  5. The UEFA Euro final match against Spain is scheduled for Sunday at 9 pm in Berlin, and the result will influence Southgate's decision about continuing as the England Trainer.
  6. The presence of Frank Lampard in the potential successor candidates signifies a strong connection to English soccer and its rich history, as Lampard is an accomplished English soccer player.
  7. Southgate had indicated that his tenure as England Manager could potentially end if they failed to win the EURO, but now even with a title win, strong criticism and a challenging EURO might ultimately lead to his departure.
