Five facts about Union Berlin's match at Bayer Leverkusen
The losing streak is over, now 1. FC Union Berlin has to get back on track in the Bundesliga. That won't be easy. On Sunday (3.30 pm/DAZN), the next trip will be to league leaders Bayer Leverkusen.
Last year, the Köpenickers were beaten 5-0 by Bayer on matchday 13. Curious: before the game, Union were first and Leverkusen 16th. This time it's the other way round. Together with the 5-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund in 2019/20, this was the highest ever defeat in the Bundesliga for the Berliners.
A ray of hope: Both teams have already been busy internationally this week. Union drew 1-1 at SSC Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday, their first points after twelve defeats in a row. Leverkusen won 1:0 at Qarabag Agdam in the Europa League on Thursday.
Record chase: The Werkself are unbeaten at the top of the Bundesliga table. Should Leverkusen win, the Rhinelanders would equal Bayern Munich's Bundesliga record from the 2015/16 season with 31 points after eleven matchdays.
Strong attack: With 30 goals scored, Leverkusen have the best offense in the league. Together with FSV Mainz 05 (both 11 goals), Union currently have the third-worst attack. Union have gone 329 minutes without a goal in the top flight. 359 minutes in the spring of 2023 represent a club record in negative terms.
Reunion: Leverkusen midfielder Robert Andrich played 66 competitive matches for Union between 2019 and 2021. He scored nine goals in these matches. His current teammate Victor Boniface scored two goals against the Berliners in the Europa League with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise last season.
Union Berlin will face Bayer Leverkusen, the league leaders in the Bundesliga, trying to break their losing streak. Last year, they encountered a challenging 5-0 defeat against Bayer, but this time, the roles are reversed with Leverkusen currently lower in the table.
