Fishermen's group seeks to combat decrease in eel population

The Saxony-Anhalt angling association aims to combat the decrease in eel populations by releasing over 1.8 tons of cultivated eels into the Elbe river system on Tuesday. This will involve introducing approximately 260,000 baby eels to the water, in hopes of increasing their numbers.

The aim of this ongoing project is to halt the significant decrease in eel numbers by implementing strategic actions and fostering sustainable rehabilitation. Plans involve dispersing young eels over numerous locations in Saxony-Anhalt, spanning approximately 3000 hectares across 180 water bodies.

The European eel is facing imminent extinction due to various factors, says the organization. These include overfishing in European coastal waters, unlawful fishing practices, and the depletion of natural habitats.
