Police - Fish poaching busted in Breisach
Illegal eel and crayfish traps have been discovered in the Rhine in Breisach (Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district). As the police announced on Friday, the traps became visible on the bank when the water level in the lock was lowered due to high water. However, fishing with nets and so-called fish traps is not permitted in Breisach. However, before the two eel traps could be recovered on Tuesday, they had already been removed by unknown persons during the night, according to police reports. It is not yet known whether it was the fish catchers themselves or other thieves.
European eels are threatened with extinction and may not be caught between September and March. The Freiburg police have opened an investigation into fish poaching.
