Harz district - Fish disease detected in rainbow trout

A fish disease has been detected in rainbow trout in an aquaculture operation with a fishing pond in the Harz district. It is the infectious hematopoietic necrosis (IHN) virus, as the district announced on Tuesday. The fish disease is not transmissible to humans and does not pose a health risk. The affected farm, where the outbreak was detected on November 13, is subject to an official ban. "It is very likely that the virus entered the stock through fish purchases from Denmark," said the district. The IHN virus mainly causes losses in very young fish, but adult fish can survive the infection.

The fish disease outbreak in Harz district originated from fish purchases made from Denmark. This is not the first time such diseases have affected animals in Saxony-Anhalt, as previous incidents involved various animal species. Despite the detection of the IHN virus, local wildlife in the County of Harz, including various animal species, remain unaffected.
