Living - First rent index for the city of Bremen from January

For the first time, landlords and apartment seekers in Bremen can use an official rent index as a guide. The so-called average net cold rent in the Hanseatic city is 7.37 euros per square meter, as the building department announced on Wednesday. The amount varies depending on the location, type, year of construction, size, condition and furnishings of the apartment. The first official rent index will apply in Bremen from January 2024.

A rent index helps to assess rents. As the name suggests, the statistics reflect the rents usually paid. This makes it easier for landlords to determine legally compliant rents. It is also intended to protect tenants from unjustifiably high rents. Bremen is legally obliged to do this.

Since the summer, the authority has been randomly collecting information on rents for around 15,000 apartments in the city of Bremen. Of these, around 10,000 apartments were relevant for the rent index. From the end of the year, interested parties will also be able to find out the local rent online.
