In North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), there have been placement of gun ban zones during specific hours for a while. Now, the first comprehensive gun ban zone has been established.

Cologne-Mülheim: Residents Express Concern Over Suspected Terrorist Activity - First permanent weapons-free zone established in North Rhine-Westphalia

Wiener Platz in Cologne-Muelheim is now a permanent weapons-free zone, following its implementation on Wednesday. According to a spokesperson from the Cologne police department, this restriction encompasses knives, batons, pepper spray, and other weapons, and is in place at all hours. In addition to this, there are two more weapons-free zones in Cologne, but they only apply during specific times, particularly on weekends. One such area is at the rings, while another is on Zülpicher Straße. Furthermore, Dusseldorf has a temporary weapons-free zone set up in the old town and along a stretch of the Rheinufer. The police representative stated, "This is a step towards increased security for the citizenry." Wiener Platz has been identified as one of many crime hotspots in Cologne, characterized by a high drug and alcohol scene, which in turn, results in violence.
