Parties - First party conference of the "Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance" at the end of January

The new " Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance" plans to hold its first party conference in Berlin on January 27. This information from "Der Spiegel" was confirmed to the German Press Agency on Friday. Prior to this, the new party is to be formally founded at the beginning of January and the first 400 or so members are to be admitted. The statutes are currently being drawn up, the magazine reported.

Sahra Wagenknecht, formerly a long-time member and at times parliamentary group leader of the Left Party in the Bundestag, resigned from the party in October along with nine other MPs. The association "Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht" is currently preparing the foundation of the party and collecting donations for it.

Treasurer Ralph Suikat told the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" (Friday): "We will reach a seven-figure sum in the next few days." He added: "That sounds a lot at first, but the major parties spend tens of millions in an election campaign. In this respect, we are satisfied, but we still have a long way to go."

The new party wants to run in the European elections in June and, if possible, in the three state elections in Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenburg in 2024.

The German Press Agency reported on Friday that Der Spiegel confirmed the new "Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance" will hold its first party conference in Berlin on January 27, following their formal party founding at the beginning of the month. Despite collecting over seven figures in donations, as stated by treasurer Ralph Suikat, the new party has a long way to go before major party spending levels. Sahra Wagenknecht, who previously served as a long-time member and parliamentary group leader of Germany's Left Party, resigned with nine other MPs in October and now plans to run the new party in upcoming European and state elections.
