First defeat for Göttingen basketball players in the Europe Cup
The BG Göttingen basketball team missed out on an early group win in the Europe Cup. The club from Lower Saxony lost 104:109 (91:91, 46:41) to Italian first-division club Pallacanestro Varese after overtime on Wednesday and lost for the first time in the current European Cup season. A win at Cypriot club Keravnos BC next Wednesday would seal Göttingen's place in the second group stage. The Latvian Karlis Silins was the Bundesliga club's best scorer with 31 points.
Led by the strong Silins, the team of Head Coach Olivier Foucart went into the break with a five-point lead. The center scored 19 points after 20 minutes and was thus responsible for almost half of Göttingen's points. The home side remained in front after the break, but repeatedly surrendered a clear lead. The Italians scored six points in a row to reach overtime and had the better nerves in the extra period.
Despite the loss in the Europe Cup, Göttingen's Basketball Guard Karlis Silins shone with 31 points, showcasing his prowess in the game. In their upcoming Europe Cup match against Keravnos BC, a win will secure Göttingen's spot in the second group stage, as they look to bounce back from their defeat against Italian side Pallacanestro Varese in the Europe Cup Cup.
