Wild Creatures - First baby sloth born at Walsrode Bird Park
Shock at World Bird Park Walsrode: Opossums Elisa and Bilbo have astonishingly become parents. Following around eleven months of pregnancy, the female delivered offspring as the park reported.
The delivery occurs in the trees for opossums. The newborn weighs between 300-400 grams, possesses fur and a fully-developed set of teeth. Instantly following birth, the tiny one climbed onto its mother's stomach and clung to her fur, where it will remain for the next few months. For the park, this is their first opossum birth.
Bilbo arrived in Walsrode from Zoo Faunia in Madrid in April 2021. Park manager Javier Gimeno Martinez was even present at Bilbo's birth in Madrid. In 2022, Elisa from the Zoo Halle joined Bilbo. At first, it appeared that the two held minimal interest in each other, said the park. Nevertheless, through the past year, they've grown close friends. However, prior to the birth, no one anticipated that the female was pregnant.
Opossums generally reside in trees, dwelling mostly in Central and South America's rainforests. Their sluggish metabolism and low activity levels are adapted to life in the treetops, they sleep up to 15 hours daily.

The newborn opossum, weighing between 300-400 grams, is the first baby sloth at Walsrode Bird Park, born to parents Elisa and Bilbo. Bilbo, an opossum, previously resided in Zoo Faunia in Madrid, Spain. The animal park in Lower Saxony, Germany, where Bilbo now resides, also welcomed Elisa from Zoo Halle in 2022. As the baby sloths grow, they will likely display similar traits to their parents, such as their love for trees and long sleep periods.
