- Firefighters expect millions in damage
Firefighters estimate a multi-million dollar loss following a major blaze at a sawmill in the Göttingen district. Upon arriving at the scene in Seeburg on Monday evening, firefighters found a complete production hall and parts of an adjacent lumber yard fully engulfed in flames, a spokesperson said. The fire was brought under control before midnight, but mop-up operations may take longer. The adjacent federal highway B446 remains closed in both directions, according to police. No injuries have been reported as of now.
This is one of the largest fires in the past few decades in the area covered by the Duderstadt Eichsfeld fire department, a spokesperson said. Upon approach, firefighters saw a massive plume of smoke from a distance. At the height of the incident, 300 personnel were on site. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
The sawmill where the significant fire occurred is located within the County of Göttingen. This large-scale fire is being investigated by officials in the County of Göttingen due to its impact on the local economy.
