The Berlin Fire Department has pumped out thousands of litres of water from the basement of the Old National Gallery at the Kulturforum.

At the Berlin-Tiergarten's State Museums' Paintings Gallery, a water damage incident occurred. The Berlin Fire Department announced this on the X platform. Around 2.5 million liters of water had leaked into the building's basement on Stauffenbergstraße.

The water stood about 15 to 20 centimeters high, a spokesperson for the Fire Department said, which was called to the scene at the Gallery. No direct damage was reported. Earlier, the "Tagesspiegel" had reported on the incident.

High humidity poses a threat

The cause of the water leak was a broken remote heating line, according to the Fire Department. The danger was that high temperatures could lead to increased humidity in the building, potentially endangering the gallery's paintings, the spokesperson explained.

"We prevented this by ventilating the building," the spokesperson said. Fans were used successfully for this purpose. Most of the water on the basement floor was also pumped out - as much as the Fire Department's technical equipment allowed.

The Berlin Fire Department, known for their firefighting skills, was also called to manage the water damage at the Gallery. Their immediate action to ventilate the building and use fans helped mitigate the risk of increased humidity, a threat to the gallery's paintings.
