Firecrackers thrown in Augsburg: suspects remanded in custody
Following the explosion of a firecracker during FC Augsburg's Bundesliga match against TSG Hoffenheim, two men have been remanded in custody. As the police announced on Monday, an investigating judge issued an arrest warrant and is enforcing it. According to the police, the men are two 28-year-olds from the Göppingen area.
The Augsburg criminal investigation department had already taken over the investigation into causing an explosion of explosives at the weekend. As far as the police know, the number of people injured has risen to thirteen. These include several children and young people.
The firework had been thrown from the "guest block area" during the 1:1 between FCA and Hoffenheim on Saturday and exploded near the corner flag. Two men were arrested during the match.
The men were identified from video footage of the incident. After the match, TSG sporting director Alexander Rosen called the firecracker throw "nonsense beyond belief". FCA sporting director Marinko Jurendić demanded: "This must be punished severely." Like the players on the pitch, most of the 28,000 spectators escaped with a scare.
Referee Felix Brych interrupted the match for around five minutes in the 57th minute due to the incident. The match was then played out without further incident. "I've never heard such a loud bang in a soccer stadium," said Brych, who is also very experienced internationally.
TSG Hoffenheim apologized in a statement on Saturday evening and announced that it would support the investigating authorities to ensure that the incident was fully investigated. "In the 16 years we have been in the Bundesliga, this is the first time we have been confronted with such an insane aberration," it said. With its values, TSG stands for peaceful coexistence.
Despite the incident involving a firecracker during FC Augsburgs Bundesliga match against TSG Hoffenheim, resulting in two suspects being remanded in custody, the Bundesliga match between FC Augsburg and TSG Hoffenheim resumed without further incident. The 28-year-old suspects, originating from the Göppingen area, are believed to have thrown the firecracker from the "guest block area," causing injuries to thirteen people, including children and young people.
