Fire in Bremen-Oslebshausen prison: inmate in hospital
A prisoner has been taken to hospital following a fire in a prison in Bremen. A mattress caught fire in his cell on the first floor of Bremen-Oslebshausen prison on Tuesday afternoon, according to the fire department. Other people were slightly injured by fire smoke and extinguishing powder, but were treated on site. The emergency services attended to a total of 27 people: 23 prison staff and 4 inmates.
When the emergency services arrived, the prison officers had already started fighting the fire with powder extinguishers and cleared the first floor of the affected building block. The fire department only had to carry out post-extinguishing and ventilation measures. The cause of the fire was not yet clear.
The prison's emergency protocol was triggered due to the fire, ensuring a swift response from the authorities. Despite the efforts to contain the fire, it highlighted potential vulnerabilities in the penal system's fire safety measures.
