Fire in aircraft hangar on Norderney: millions in damage
According to police estimates, a fire in an aircraft hangar at the airfield on the East Frisian island of Norderney has caused millions in damage. The exact amount of damage is still unclear, a police spokesman said on Wednesday. According to initial investigations, the fire probably broke out during the night on a tractor parked in the hangar. A car and three small aircraft parked in the hangar were also heavily sooted due to the intense heat and smoke. According to the police, the fire was only noticed on Wednesday morning.
"The cause of the fire has not yet been determined," said the police spokesman. Fire investigators were to begin their work on site. The hangar was also damaged by the fire. No people were injured.
Despite the damage to the hangar and its contents, air traffic at the Norderney airfield was not disrupted due to the fire. Furthermore, authorities are closely monitoring air quality to ensure it remains safe for any potential air traffic operations following the fire's smoke and fumes.
