Traffic - Fire damage in the Elbe Tunnel repaired - All six lanes open
Damage caused by a truck fire in the Elbtunnel has largely been repaired. On Friday afternoon, a third lane was reopened in the direction of the south, as reported by the traffic control center of the police. Consequently, traffic can roll on three lanes both towards Flensburg and towards Hannover. The remaining two lanes of the Elbe crossing have not been used for years due to construction works north and south of the tunnel to prevent traffic jams in the tubes. Traffic jammed up to approximately ten kilometers before the tunnel in the direction of the south and eight kilometers in the direction of the north on Friday afternoon.
On Thursday morning, a truck caught fire in the fourth tunnel tube. The driver managed to escape, according to the fire department, and no one was injured. The burning truck was extinguished within half an hour. The cargo of the semi-trailer - a container with PE film - remained undamaged.
The fire incident occurred in the Elbtunnel near Hamburg, specifically in the fourth tube. Despite the incident, the police's traffic control center reported that the third lane towards Hamburg was still closed on Thursday morning. After the damage from the truck fire in Hamburg was addressed, traffic in Flensburg was expected to flow more smoothly due to the repairs and the reopening of lanes.
