- Fire at the Steelers arena
A fire at the EgeTrans Arena of the Bietigheim Steelers ice hockey team has caused an estimated 500,000 euros in damages. The fire started in a sauna in the basement of the sports and multi-purpose hall in Bietigheim-Bissingen (Ludwigsburg district), a police spokesman said.
The sauna was completely destroyed. Large parts of the basement were also damaged by the fire. The sauna was on when the fire started, so a technical defect cannot be ruled out. No one was injured. Whether the hall can continue to be used is currently unclear.
On social media, the team shared: "At this point, no statement can be made about the exact extent and possible consequences for the rest of the season's preparation."
The Bietigheim Steelers played in the Deutsche Eishockeyliga (DEL) until two years ago and then fell to the Oberliga Süd.
The fire incident impacted the sports facilities significantly, affecting not just the ice hockey team but also other teams that utilize the multi-purpose hall. Despite the occurrence of the sports-related incident, the team is resilient and continues to prepare for the season with cautious optimism.
