Fire at old gymnasium not yet fully extinguished
After a major fire in Wennigsen (Hanover region), firefighting work is continuing on the gymnasium of an empty police school. There are still pockets of embers, said a fire department spokesman on Wednesday. The fire had kept around 170 firefighters busy since Tuesday morning. The gymnasium burned down completely and collapsed.
On Wednesday, emergency services from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) want to tear down the walls. According to the fire department, samples were also taken to check for possible asbestos contamination. The cause of the fire is still unclear. Police fire investigators will only be able to enter the scene of the fire once the extinguishing work has been completed, said the spokesperson.
Despite the ongoing efforts of firefighters, pockets of embers from the fires at the old gymnasium remain unextinguished. On Wednesday, the THW plans to dismantle the walls of the burned-down building to further contain the situation.
