In a fire at a refugee shelter in the Karlsruhe district, four people were lightly injured. The building is temporarily uninhabitable, police said. Around 40 people lived in the shelter in Ubstadt-Weiher, and alternative accommodation is now being organized for them.

According to police, heavy smoke was noticed in the shelter in the early afternoon. The residents were able to evacuate the building in time. Four of them were lightly injured by smoke inhalation and received medical treatment on site.

The exact location of the fire remained unclear initially, as did the extent of the property damage and the cause of the fire. There are no indications of arson at this time. The criminal police have taken over the investigation.

The asylum seekers residing in the shelter were relocated to temporary accommodation due to the fire incident. Concerns have arisen about the future of the asylum seekers as they wait for a permanent solution.
