Special meeting - Finance Committee recommends declaration of emergency

The finance committee of the Brandenburg state parliament has recommended the declaration of a new budget emergency for 2024. A decision on this is to be made in a special session of the state parliament on Wednesday. Only the AfD parliamentary group voted against the recommendation. The representative of the Left abstained.

Following the budget ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court, the red-black-green governing coalition wants to secure its Brandenburg aid package to cushion the consequences of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and incur up to two billion euros in new debt to do so. The vote on this was originally scheduled to take place in the plenary session on Friday. However, the AfD parliamentary group managed to ensure that there would be a hearing of experts in the Finance Committee beforehand, which took place on Monday.
