Special meeting - Finance Committee recommends declaration of an emergency
The finance committee of the Brandenburg state parliament has recommended the declaration of a new budget emergency for 2024. A decision on this is to be made in a special session of the state parliament on Wednesday. Only the AfD parliamentary group voted against the recommendation. The representative of the Left abstained.
Following the budget ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court, the red-black-green governing coalition wants to secure its Brandenburg aid package to cushion the consequences of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. It wants to be allowed to incur up to two billion euros in new debt for this purpose. The vote was originally scheduled to take place in the plenary session on Friday. However, the AfD parliamentary group managed to ensure that there would be a hearing of experts in the Finance Committee beforehand.
In a contribution to the written hearing, the Landkreistag (Association of Districts) stated that it was essential that there was no loss of the necessary financial relief. The Association of Towns and Municipalities stated that towns and municipalities were still reliant on support from the Brandenburg package to cope with the refugee situation, high energy prices and general inflation. The AfD in the state parliament wanted to prevent the consultation and declaration of a new budget emergency for 2024 this week, but failed with an urgent application to the constitutional court.
