Parliament - Final decision in the Thuringian budget dispute

The controversial Thuringian state budget for 2024 is set to clear the final hurdle. The budget will be finally discussed in the state parliament today, Wednesday. This will be followed by a marathon vote on a large number of corrections to the state government's draft. The red-red-green minority coalition had reached a series of compromises with the opposition CDU parliamentary group so that Thuringia would have an approved budget in the election year 2024.

Concessions made by the red-red-green coalition will reduce the budget volume from the planned 13.75 billion euros to 13.54 billion euros. According to the chairman of the budget committee, cuts of 256 million euros were made. This was offset by some additional expenditure, reducing the budget volume by around 200 million euros. In addition, the state's financial reserve for the upcoming budget will not be used up completely as planned by the government. It should amount to around 700 million euros at the end of 2024.

The final vote on the budget is not expected until later on Wednesday evening. The state parliament session will begin with the discussion of a teacher training law. This will be followed by a decision on loan repayments and a special fund. The governing coalition does not have its own majority in the state parliament - it lacks four votes. It is therefore dependent on compromises with the CDU when making decisions.
