- Fifteen instances of measles reported in Saxony.
In Saxony, after a measles outbreak in the Vogtland area at the start of the year, there's been just one extra case recorded. This brings the total count to 16 cases as per the latest info from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). For all of 2022, Saxony saw only 2 measles cases.
Late February saw the health department in Vogtland report a considerable measles outbreak affecting 12 unvaccinated kids. Two more cases were added in early March. According to RKI figures, a 20-year-old in the Bautzen district got sick around mid-July.
Germany-wide, there have been 503 measles cases this year. This number hasn't been seen since 2018, when there were 496 cases by September 9th and 545 for the entire year. In 2023, only 79 measles cases were reported nationwide.
This year, North Rhine-Westphalia has been the most impacted with 191 cases, followed closely by Berlin with 91 cases and Bavaria with 62 cases.
Measles, as per RKI data, are highly contagious diseases that can lead to severe complications, particularly in children under 2 years old. Symptoms include fever, red eyes, and a characteristic rash. Once you've had measles, your body builds immunity. Vaccination is mandatory for kids attending places like kindergarten, after-school care, or school.
The 20-year-old measles case in the Bautzen district was reported by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in mid-July. Despite the outbreak in Vogtland, Saxony's total measles cases for 2023, including this new case, still remain lower than the number recorded in 2018, as indicated by RKI data.
