Cristian Fiel has been named as the new manager for Bundesliga 2 side Hertha BSC, succeeding long-time coach Pal Dardai. The 44-year-old signed a deal until 2026, as revealed by the official announcement made by Hertha on Thursday. He joins from fellow league team 1. FC Nuremberg.

Ben Weber, sports director at the Berlin club, remarked, "Fiel's offensive and assertive approach on the pitch aligns perfectly with his candid and direct personality, and we're thrilled to have him take over as our head coach from next season."

Given that Fiel's contract in Nuremberg still had a year left to run, Hertha will need to pay a release fee. Reports indicate this could be in the region of €500,000. Nuremberg has confirmed the payment of a confidentiality agreement.

Much like Dardai, who has an unrivaled knowledge of Hertha's youth system, Fiel also pledges to adopt the club's strategy of financial prudence and significantly invest in youth development. Fiel has a reputation for nurturing young talent, having aided the progress of players such as Can Uzun while at Nuremberg.

Fiel, who enjoyed a brief stint as a player for 1. FC Union Berlin, is renowned for his preference for attack-minded football. He'll need to address Hertha's shaky defensive performance as well.

Hertha had declared ahead of their final league game against Osnabrück that Dardai's coaching stay would not be renewed, though he would stay with the team in another capacity. The side ended their first season following their relegation in 2023 in a disheartening ninth place, and another transitional season with a mid-table finish might be a stretch for the financially beleaguered Hertha.

Fiel's appointment as Hertha BSC's new coach comes after a successful stint with 1. FC Nuremberg in the Bundesliga 2. Francekonia-based Ben Weber, Hertha's sports director, expressed excitement about Fiel's aggressive playing style and candid persona. Despite having a year left on his contract, Fiel will transfer to Hertha BSC Berlin, with reports suggesting a €500,000 release fee. Fiel's managerial philosophy aligns with Hertha's focus on youth development, as shown by his previous involvement in nurturing young talent like Can Uzun in Nuremberg. In his new role, Fiel will need to address Hertha's defensive issues and aim for mid-table placement in the challenging Bundesliga 2, following their disappointing ninth-place finish in their first season post-relegation.
