Fiél and Weber: playing together as Hertha's goal

The ninth place was not enough for Hertha BSC. Now the Berliners want to climb back up. That won't be easy. Therefore, the goal is formulated ambiguously before the start of the season.

Cristian Fiel and Benjamin Weber aren't using the term "promotion" as their season goal. However, the new head coach and sporting director of Hertha BSC make no secret of their ambitions in the 2. Bundesliga before the season starts.

"We want to be as successful as possible, we want to win every game. We want to be among the teams at the top," Weber said at the press conference of the Berliners before their opening match on Saturday (13:00 CET/Sky) against SC Paderborn.

Fiel sees the time for the first competitive game has come after more than five weeks of preparation. "I can see that the players can't wait. Now it's about points. We will be ready," the 44-year-old promised ahead of his debut as Hertha coach at the Olympiastadion.

The high performance density with many traditional clubs and several promotion candidates appeals to the former professional. Already at the beginning of the millennium, the second league was spoken of as the best, now it presents itself even better and as a "great challenge".

More than half a dozen promotion candidates

There is not one team that goes into the season as the favorite. Several teams would "see themselves in another league". Weber spoke of "six, seven, eight" teams that want to go up.

Fiel has to do without Fabian Reese (ankle) and Kevin Sessa (knee), who are in rehabilitation after their operations. Weber did not want to speculate about a comeback time for the duo. It currently looks a bit better for Sessa.

Fiel expresses his excitement about the high performance density in the Second Bundesliga, mentioning it as a "great challenge" due to the presence of many traditional clubs and promotion candidates. Weber reiterates this sentiment, stating that there are "six, seven, eight" teams aiming for promotion in the league.
