Cycling - Fidanza wins bunch sprint of the Tour of Thuringia
An Italian rider, Martina Fidanza of the German Team Ceratizit WNT, won the second stage of the Thüringen-Rundfahrt. In the mass sprint on Wednesday, after 119.2 kilometers around Gera, she managed to win against her fellow countrywomen Barbara Guarischi (Team SD Worx-Protime) and Maria Giulia Confalonieri (Uno-X Mobility TEAM). The Belgian rider Margot Vanpachtenbeke defended her Yellow Jersey of the leader.
There was a lot of action during the Gera circuit race. First, a large leading group broke away but could not stay away. Then, six riders attempted to escape and had good chances of winning. However, two kilometers before the finish, the main field caught up and sprinted for the victory. The third stage will take place on this Thursday over 144.6 kilometers around Erfurt.
The 36th edition of the Thüringen-Rundfahrt for women is also the Olympic test event. Four weeks before the Summer Games in Paris, a top-notch field is at the start for the UCI Women’s ProSeries stage race.
